TYLER – A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Sept. 6 in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception for Bishop Charles Herzig, first bishop of the Diocese of Tyler. During Mass, the third Bishop Charles E. Herzig humanitiarian award will be presented to an outtanding person in the diocese.

Ultreya Diocesana/Fiesta de Colores, a family picnic day, will be held 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 6 at Casa Betania on Lavender Road, north of Loop 323 in Tyler. The event will feature food booths, games, face painting, sack races, horse rides, mariachi music and much more, to raise funds for Casa Betania construction. All women of the diocese aged 16-30 are invited to take part in A Process for Vocation Discernment, a call from Bishop Álvaro Corrada, SJ. A Marriage Preparation Day will be held 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 7 at the chancery in Tyler to give couples preparing for sacramental marriage a chance to focus on each other, their future relationship and God's design for marriage. Topics include personality styles, family of origin, communication, conflict, finances, children and family, marital sexuality, natural family planning and a life of faith. The Tyler Diocesan Council of Catholic Women will hold its 15th biannual convention Oct. 30-31 in Mt Pleasant. The TDCCW will dedicate the 2009 convention to Lillian Moffeit, a longtime volunteer active in Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Jacksonville and in the TDCCW. Carthage 

St. William of Vercelli Church. The Ladies' Guild will hold a bake sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 12-13. The guild will serve chili and soup at a membership drive at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 14.

Emory

St. John the Evangelist Church. For the second year, parishioners will staff an information booth at the Rains County Fair Sept. 15-19, answering questions about the Catholic faith and handing out flyers, copies of the Catholic East Texas and other material.

Flint

St. Mary Magdalene Church. A healing Mass will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Sept. 16 in St. Mary Magdalene Church by Father Phi Nguyen of the Diocese of Houston. Mass will be preceded by adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at 6 p.m., with the sacrament of reconciliation available. Anointing and laying-on of hands will follow Mass. Gun Barrel City

Hallsville

Our Lady of Grace Church. The annual Fall Festival will be held 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 27, featuring food, bingo, games, train ride and live entertainment by Deborah Gilbert and Greg Scobee of Mobbery Baptist Church, Janelle and Franco Lanas, and Our Lady of Grace Spanish Choir. At 2 p.m., festival-goers will pause to honor area veterans and members of the Armed Forces, with a rendition of the national anthem by OLG member Janelle Lanas, a student at Hallsville High School. Tickets for a raffle of $500, $300 and $200 Wal-Mart gift cards are $1, available at the church office or at the festival. Longview

St. Mary Catholic School. St. Mary’s parishioners and school parents are gearing up for Wünderfall 2009. The annual fund-raising dinner dance will be 6:30 p.m. to midnight Sept. 19 at the Maude Cobb Convention Center in Longview, offering a German dinner and drinks in the tradition of Oktoberfest, a silent auction and live music by The Pictures of Austin. In conjunction with Wünderfall, a drawing will be held for a $5,000 Visa gift card. Second prize is a new 150 cc vintage style Moped scooter and third prize is a $300 gift card from Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine. Raffle tickets at $5 each are available from St. Mary students or at the school and church offices. They also will be on sale at Wünderfall.

Lufkin

St. Patrick Church. The fiestas patrias festival begins at 9 a.m. Sept. 20 on the church grounds, featuring international foods, games, music, folkloric dances and crowning of a festival queen. A raffle planned for the festival features prizes of a four-wheeler, an emergency generator and a 32-inch flat screen television. Chances are $1.

Madisonville

St. Elisabeth Ann Seton Church. The annual church fund-raiser, this year dubbed Steak, Rattle & Roll, will be held on the church grounds Oct. 9, featuring a steak dinner, beverages and both live and silent auctions. Tickets are $25 or $200 for a table of eight.

Marshall

St. Joseph Church. On Sept. 4, an 11 a.m. healing service with adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and laying-on of hands will be followed by Mass at 12:05 p.m. St. Joseph administrator Father Denzil Vithanage will be the celebrant.
The 12:05 p.m. Mass Sept. 11 will celebrate the lives of those who died in a terrorist attack on New York's twin towers Sept. 11, 2001, and to honor all law enforcement officers, firefighters and ambulance/rescue workers. A luncheon will follow in the parish hall.
The St. Joseph Hispanic community will begin an all-day Mexican fiesta with a Spanish-language Mass at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 13. Fiesta events include Mexican food, sports activities, music, art and crowing of a fiesta queen.
The second parish Living in Christ retreat will be held Oct. 8-10 in the parish hall. Sessions on Oct. 8 and 9 will be 5:30-9 p.m., and on Oct. 10 participants will meet from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Dinner and breakfast will be served. The retreat is limited to 40 people. Mt. Pleasant

Overton

Our Lady Queen of Angels Church. A fish fry and auction will begin at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 3 at the Assembly of God fellowship hall on East Brandon in Overton. Tickets are $7 for adults, $4 for children aged 6-12. Children ages 5 and under eat free. A silent auction begins at the same time, and a live auction opens for bidding at 5:30 p.m., with proceeds to be used for maintenance and repairs for the OLQA building. Pittsburg

Holy Cross Church. A Holy Hour will begin at 6 p.m. Sept. 4 with adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and reconciliation, followed by a healing Mass in Spanish celebrated by Father Ariel Cortes at 7:30 p.m.

Sulphur Springs

St. James the Apostle Church. The annual church auction and Mexican dinner will be held Oct. 3 in the Hopkins County Civic Center in Sulphur Springs. A dinner prepared by the Maria Aguilar family will be served at 5:30, followed by a silent auction. Tickets are $10 adults, $5 for children under 12. Texarkana

Sacred Heart Church. The Catholic Daughters of the Americas are preparing for their annual garage sale, Oct. 9-10. Call Sherry Powers at 903-293-2310 to arrange pickup of donated items.
This year's Halloween celebration will begin at 2 p.m. Oct. 25 on the church grounds. Parishioners are invited to come in costume, decorate the trunks of their cars and even bring pets in costume. A brisket cookoff and bingo highlight the event.

Tyler

Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. The 7 a.m. First Friday Mass at the cathedral Sept. 4 will be followed by benediction and exposition of the Blessed Sacrament until the 6 p.m. Mass. After the morning Mass, a continental breakfast will be served in the office meeting room on the south side of the main parking lot.

The Altar Society will hold a membership coffee 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 14 at the home of Marnie Joseph, 4100 Copeland Rd. in Tyler. All women of the parish are invited.
A series of five classes continues the Called and Gifted process to help people learn how God is calling them to serve others. Sessions will be offered 12-2 p.m. in the cathedral center Sept. 8 and 22, Oct. 6 and 20 and Nov. 3. Completion of Part I of Called and Gifted is a prerequisite. The annual parish fair will be held at McCallum Stadium at Bishop T.K. Gorman Catholic Schools, featuring an afternoon Mass, games, food and information booths staffed by parish ministries.

Waskom

St. Lawrence of Brindisi Church. The fall festival Sept. 27 will feature food, music, games and entertainment. A fiesta queen will be crowned.
St. Lawrence administrator Father Bernard Boteju will lead a pilgrimage to Rome and the Holy Land Nov. 9-22. Four days in Rome, highlighted by an audience with Pope Benedict XVI, will be followed by tours of sacred Christian sites in Israel. The cost of $3,300 covers round-trip airfare, all hotels and most meals. Most spots on the tour are already filled, but seven spaces remain.
