Parishes, groups to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe
By JO ANNE FLORES EMBLETON
TYLER
– Special novenas and celebrations are being planned at churches
throughout the Tyler Diocese as members honor Our Lady of Guadalupe,
whose feast day is Dec. 12.
The
tradition dates back to 1531, according to legend, when an Indian
peasant named Juan Diego was approached by the Blessed Mother as he
made his way to Mass in Mexico City. She asked him to appeal to the
bishop of Mexico to build a church in her honor on the spot where she
appeared.
He
agreed to the request, but encountered setbacks along the way. With her
help, however, he convinced the prelate to honor her request when the
tilma (poncho) in which he carried a bouquet of fragrant, out-of-season
roses, bore an image of La Virgencita.
